Domain Names, Web Hosting & SSL Certificates

Your website requires a few ongoing expenses.  These include:

  • Domain Name
  • Web Hosting
  • SSL Certificate

As you probably already know, a domain name, also known as a URL or web address, is the identity of your website. Most web hosts will register your domain name for you when buying hosting. So what is “hosting” exactly? Basically you need to store the files that the run your website on a web server. Web hosts offer this service for a monthly or annual fee.

The last item you’ll need for your website is an SSL certificate.  Have you ever tried to visit a website only to have your browser tell you “your connection is not secure” or “your connection is not private”?  That’s because the website owner doesn’t have a properly installed SSL certificate.  You’ll need to have this component in order to have folks be able to access your site.

So what can you expect to pay?

  • Domain names are typically $10-$20/year
  • Basic hosting can range from $5-$20/month
  • SSL certificates typically are about $60/year.
(They can be more depending on your site’s needs, but they can also be free if it’s included in your web hosting plan.)

These prices vary, of course, and I’m happy to help you choose the right level for your needs.
